Serving The Injured Throughout Southern California

Where Do Most Accidents Occur In California?

California is known for its picturesque landscape and beautiful weather, but it also has a dark side. The state has some of the most dangerous roads in the country and more than its fair share of auto accidents. The golden state also has a reputation for being one of the most hazardous places to drive in. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), In 2019, there were nearly 3,316 fatal motor vehicle crashes in California; by fatalities and number of crashes, it’s no secret that California’s roads are among the deadliest in the nation.

California’s Dangerous Roads: Auto-Accidents and How to Avoid Them

Most accidents in California occur on urban roads, with Los Angeles County leading the way. In 2016, the number of car accidents in Los Angeles had significantly increased by nearly 20 percent to 55,350. Approximately one person died in Los Angeles car accidents every 40 hours. While these statistics are shocking, it’s essential to analyze where these crashes occurred and what may have contributed to these fatal accidents.

When you get behind the wheel, there is always a possibility you may be involved in a crash. However, the chances significantly increase depending on which road you’re driving. Our car accident attorneys explain which roads are considered to be the most hazardous to drive on in California, and discuss how you can prevent a crash while driving on these roads.

Interstate 5 (I-5)

This interstate is considered to be one of the most dangerous roads in the country. It is a major north-to-south route that spans from San Ysidro, California, to Blaine, Washington, running through major cities; it is more than 1,300 miles long.

What makes this interstate particularly dangerous is its high volume of traffic, coupled with reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, poor visibility, hazardous road conditions, distracted drivers, etc. This route is considered so deadly for drivers that the Federal Highway Administration is funding a corridor project to improve traffic safety, reduce congestion, and improve road conditions for drivers.

Interstate 10 (I-10)

Another dangerous highway in the golden state is Interstate 10. This route spans from Santa Monica, California, to Jacksonville, Florida. This east-to-west interstate is recognized as one of the deadliest routes in California due to heavy traffic congestion and other factors such as speeding and impaired drivers that lead to a surge of fatal accidents on this interstate.

To improve heavy traffic on this route, The California Department of Transportation and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority has proposed the Interstate 10 Corridor Project. This project will greatly improve traffic operation on the I-10 Freeway corridor and help prevent fatal crashes.

State Route 99

State Route 99 is a north-to-south highway stretching across the Central Valley of California.

Did you know this highway is recognized as the most dangerous highway throughout the United States? It poses many risks for fatal crashes due to hazardous road conditions, poor lighting, narrow lanes, traffic congestion, and other factors that contribute to these dangerous driving conditions.

Among this list, additional routes require extra caution and defensive driving while driving through the Golden State. Although it’s impossible to predict when an accident can occur, we can try our best to promote safe driving habits to help decrease the chances of getting involved in a wreck.

Safe Driving Techniques

If you find yourself driving on one of these routes, there are safety precautions you can take to help ensure your safety behind the wheel.

  • Maintain a safe following distance.

  • Watch your speed.

  • Plan your route ahead of time.

  • Maximize your visibility.

  • Be alert.
